PSBR in the News

  • Camp gives students up close look at STEM concepts: Flowers, bugs, snails and more look completely different under a microscope, something students taking part in the Driving STEM Forward Camp found fascinating. “It was really cool to see the heartbeat of something so small,” said Evelyn Fodor, 11, of Summerhill, after watching the hearts of water fleas beating. That exercise and more were part of the one-day camp held Wednesday at the Young Peoples Community Center, in partnership with Cambria County Child Development, PA CareerLink Cambria County and the Pennsylvania Society of Biomedical Research. The free camp was geared toward sixth and seventh graders who are on the cusp of entering high school and making plans for their future. Click here to read the article.
  • $50,000 Grant Awarded to PSBR in Support of its Student Education Program: The Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research (PSBR) was awarded a $51,935.00 grant to support its growing Science Program and Research Coach (SPARC) education outreach program. The Appalachian Regional Commission, an economic development agency representing a partnership of federal, state, and local governments in 13 Appalachian states, awarded PSBR a $51,935.00 grant that PSBR will match with internal funds to bring the SPARC program to 5th-8th grade students and teachers throughout all five Bedford County school districts and the County’s charter school. The grant will increase the number of students with biomedical science knowledge and skills in order to grow the local workforce pipeline so that more individuals from the County pursue and enter careers in the biomedical science field. ARC funding will be used to cover personnel costs, travel expenses, supplies, equipment, and the hiring additional educators. Click here to read the press release.
  • Grant Funding Awarded to PSBR in Support of its Student Education Program: The Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research (PSBR) was awarded a $50,000 grant to support its growing Science Program and Research Coach (SPARC) education outreach program. To help further its commitment to increase the number of diverse Philadelphians entering STEM careers by 2030, global pharmaceutical company GSK awarded PSBR over $51,000 through the corporation’s STEM Equity charitable grants program, which will allow PSBR to utilize SPARC to bring curriculum-enhancing biomedical science lessons directly to over 2,000 Philadelphia students in both in-school and out-of-school time settings, as well as provide professional development to participating teachers and instructors. GSK committed to support the Philadelphia STEM Equity Collective with $1 million in grant funds each year over 10 years to nonprofit organizations working to address inequity in STEM education and career pathways in Philadelphia. The latest award follows an initial $25,000 grant from GSK to PSBR in late 2020. Click here to read the press release.
  • $470,000 Grant Awarded to PSBR in Support of its Student Education Program: The Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research (PSBR) was awarded a $470,000 grant to support its growing Science Program and Research Coach (SPARC) education outreach program. The grant funding comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Of 156 organizations that applied, PSBR was one of the 42 organizations throughout Pennsylvania awarded a collective $10 million in this round of grant funding. The PAsmart Advancing Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education was awarded to PSBR in collaboration with Chester County Intermediate Unit. The grant will allow PSBR to utilize a three-pronged approach to bring science education directly to rural, urban and migrant student populations. By employing a mobile strategy, PSBR is able to cross geographical and language barriers to engage students who historically fall behind their peers. With this investment from the Commonwealth, PSBR will expand access to and boost inclusion in science education, with a goal of inspiring students to consider further STEM-related training and careers. Governor Tom Wolf launched PAsmart in 2018 and the administration distributed nearly $80 million statewide to support STEM and computer science education in hundreds of schools and expand job training through registered apprenticeships and industry partnerships.
